We have to train how we work with the machines, but I think the result really is we are superpower humans as a result of being able to work with these machines. Generative AI can create more than just text and images — it’s clearly generated a hype cycle around AI companies and rabid investor interest in the space.

First there was the rise of the Internet and then mobile phones putting supercomputers into billions of people’s pockets. This week, the Open Source Security Foundation and national cybersecurity leaders met in Washington D.C., to discuss these issues and called for improvement in all areas of AI security.

It’s beloved by engineers, attracting more than a million within about a year and delivering a substantial boost in productivity. (Even if you’re a top engineer, it might write half your code or more.) It also stands to become a commercial blockbuster. Charging $10-19 per seat per month, Copilot could grow to generate $1 billion or more in annual revenue among GitHub’s 100 million users. Generative AI is inherently creative, so it’s natural to see a lot of innovation in other creative fields. Runway generates, edits and applies effects to video that met the quality bar for the Oscar-winning team behind Everything Everywhere All at Once.

The other categories — the boxes on our landscape that are relatively sparse now — I don’t think they’re gonna be sparse for long. When I first put out our blog post about how the tech and how the different pieces of technology are becoming ready, I thought 3D, video, bio, they were going to take longer based on some conversations. Basically everyone wrote in to me like, “You’re wrong, this stuff is happening way faster than you think it is.” And they were right. I think similar to what you saw with text and image happen where the models Yakov Livshits were a couple years back, I think you’ll start to see the application space start to flourish for these other modalities as well. Well capitalized companies that can make upfront investment into building their own foundation models should have a long-term advantage relative to companies building at the application layer.

Eventually, Hasan said he sees BOMbots moving more directly into open source remediation.

The stat — [that] they’re responsible for 40% of their users’ code — is just mind-blowing to me. And so code is the other effort where we’re seeing a lot of both exciting founder development and then also user interest. Start-ups would get run over by more established players with deeper pockets.

Lineaje software uses crawlers to collect up to 170 attributes on each software component listed in an SBOM, including open source libraries and dependencies, Hasan said. This naturally leads to an overwhelming number of vulnerabilities reported — thousands, in many cases. So rather than building your own dashboard, the front end is driven by LLMs simplifying all the data we collect and making it very interactive.”

We think generative AI stands to transform one industry after another, making all kinds of professionals more effective at work and delighting waves of consumers. Much of the back office workload stems from the conflicting incentives between payors and providers. Providers often get paid for the service, rather than the outcome. Payors are naturally skeptical of what providers represent as necessary and would rather not pay for a service or drug.

Although this may be a cloud-first phenomenon, it won’t be cloud-only, as noted by veteran analyst and columnist David Linthicum. There are clear dangers, though, in accepting machine outputs as “good enough.” For individual workers there is the risk of producing large amounts of mediocre work. Knowledge work, whether marketing or scientific research, is valuable to the extent that it is particular and excellent.
